About this coloring page
Wearing a pointy party hat, this smiling tortoise is ready to celebrate. Each shell section is its own shape, making a detailed page with a built-in pattern.
The plates on a tortoise shell are called scutes, and they are made of keratin, the same material as your fingernails. Let your child tap a fingernail and feel how hard it is, then count the shell sections together. Younger kids can color the big head and party hat first, while older kids give the center sections a darker shade than the outer ones.
Fun factSome kinds of tortoise can live for more than 100 years.
- Color ideaColor the shell sections in alternating greens and browns and give the hat bright stripes.
- After coloringPlan a pretend birthday party for the tortoise and make a guest list.
