About this coloring page

A smiling zero stands behind an empty basket, a gentle way to show that zero means none at all. The tall oval and the basket stripes make an easy page for preschoolers.

Zero is holding an empty basket and waiting for a surprise. Ask your child what Zero hopes to find, then draw one small thing inside, like a berry or a pebble. Now the basket holds one, not zero! Talk about how adding even a single thing changes the number, and how taking it back out makes the basket empty again.

Fun fact

Mathematicians in ancient India were among the first to use zero as a number of its own.

  • Color ideaColor the zero one bright color and the basket in stripes of tan and brown, with green leaves.
  • After coloringLook around the room and find something there is zero of, like zero elephants.
